Quick-Info

A family farm dedicated to sustainably cultivating coffee while restoring and regenerating the ecosystem: organic farming surrounded by rocks, woods and waterfalls, their own solar panels, diverse flora and fauna... This sustainable effort results in a full-bodied Brazilian profile consisting of pecan, brown sugar and dark chocolate – and has earned the farm the title of Brazil's second most sustainable farm. This is impressive, given that 35% of the world's coffee beans come from farms in Brazil.

• family-run since 1950
• volcanic soil (valuable minerals and trace elements, nutrients for a full flavour)
• shade trees (sun protection and better soil for the coffee plants, good for biodiversity)
• solar panels effectively lead to a negative carbon footprint
* the farm has been awarded the second most sustainable farm in Brazil

FARMER:INNEN — from the cradle to the world

The family business was founded in the 1950s in Minas Gerais with just over one hectare of land. Despite the farm's small size, the father, 'Zeca' Dutra, recognised the potential of the location and used his passion for coffee farming to steadily improve and expand the farm. When he passed away in September 1999, he left his wife and sons (who were born on the farm) with over 300 hectares of coffee-growing land.
The brothers decided to invest heavily in their education to expand their knowledge, so that they could apply the best possible practices to their farming.
They have now been active in all areas of the coffee production chain for more than 35 years. They are known both within and outside Brazil as producers of speciality and organic coffees of the highest quality and exceptional uniqueness.

NATUR — coffee cultivation, ecosystem development

Minas Gerais first gained prominence for its valuable mineral deposits. Today, the state is one of the world's largest coffee-growing regions.

Thanks to its ideal geographical location, predominantly temperate climate and a coffee-growing tradition dating back to the early 18th century, Brazil is one of the world's leading coffee producers. Around 30% of the global coffee harvest comes from the nutrient-rich, mineral-laden soil of South America's largest country – nearly one in four coffee plants grows here.
The farms situated in the coffee belt benefit from the tropical to subtropical climate, producing coffees that are typically particularly mild, smooth and delicately spiced.

More than 5,000 avocado trees provide shade. Strategically planted eucalyptus trees serve as windbreaks. African mahogany and a variety of fruit trees further promote biodiversity. The diversity of the flora attracts beneficial insects and provides shelter, refuge and food for hundreds of birds and other wildlife. This creates a diverse and balanced ecosystem.

The coffee is grown in harmony with the environment – the coffee plantations are nestled amongst rocks, forests and waterfalls.

A particular feature is the consistency of the cherries' ripening process: moderate temperatures, clearly defined dry and rainy seasons, and an altitude of between 1,000 and 1,200 metres provide optimal conditions for slow and even ripening. As a result, the cherries draw more nutrients from the plants. This promotes the development of complex flavours, pronounced sweetness, balanced acidity and a smooth texture – a terroir that produces some of the most delicious and flavourful coffees in the world.

IMPACT — award-winning negative carbon footprint

The farm takes a regenerative, ecological approach to coffee production, prioritising ecological balance and long-term sustainability. By promoting soil health, healthy biodiversity and sustainable land management, the aim is to ensure a lasting positive impact on the environment. They seek to restore and regenerate ecosystems whilst improving the livelihoods of their staff and local communities.

Their own solar panels, diverse tree planting and strict water management – every measure reflects their commitment to the environment.

The photovoltaic system not only supplies enough energy to cover the entire farm's daily electricity needs, also the environmental benefits are significant: for example, 960 tonnes less CO₂ were emitted into the atmosphere. It would take around 24,760 mature trees to absorb the same amount of CO₂ from the atmosphere. As a result, the farm effectively has a negative carbon footprint.

The initiative has paid off: in 2024, Fazenda Dutra was named the second most sustainable farm in the country at Globo Rural's prestigious 'Fazenda Sustentável 2024' awards. It recognises farms in Brazil that demonstrate outstanding environmental responsibility and sustainable innovation.

GESCHMACK — Classic, but more depth

Thanks to the artisanal processing, the altitude and the soil conditions of the plantation, a unique product is created. Every year, the coffee beans from Fazendas Dutra are ranked among the best in Brazil and the world in terms of both quality and sustainability.

The coffee cherries are processed using the natural drying method (the coffee is dried whilst the fruit is still attached to the bean). This method uses very little water and emphasises the sweet, fruity flavours in the coffee, as the beans are exposed to the fruit's natural sugars for a longer period.

The minerals from Matas de Minas in Minas Gerais, the sustainable local ecosystem, decades of experience… all of this contributes to distinctive flavours.

Traditionally, Brazilian coffee varieties are known for their low acidity, full body and creamy, chocolatey and nutty flavours. This one here is no exception: our roast brings out notes of pecans, brown sugar and dark chocolate. A classic Brazilian espresso, but with more depth — in both cultivation and consumption.
