Quick info

Climate and caring: the combination of a reliable coffee climate, traditional processes and careful production results in this successful coffee from the women’s initiative of Brazil’s first Fairtrade-certified cooperative.
The classic nutty coffee flavour of hazelnut, the subtly more complex fruitiness of stone fruit and a slightly caramel-like sweetness of brown sugar create a really tasty coffee. A treat in the cup, empowerment at origin.

Farmers

COOPFAM is a cooperative of over 500 family farmers based in Poço Fundo, a small town in Minais Gerais in south-eastern Brazil, an area that is famous for its coffee. More than 70% of the coffee farms here are very small and run by local farmers with great care and traditional processes.

COOPFAM has understood that coffee is the most important link to partners around the world and has therefore committed itself to sustainable and responsible coffee production in order to secure the future of the environment and local farmers. At the end of the 1990s, COOPFAM was the first cooperative in Brazil to be Fairtrade-certified. The welfare of families, environmental protection and a commitment to the community are at the forefront here.

This coffee comes from MOBI, an internal COOPFAM certification that supports women to produce coffee independently in order to improve their livelihoods in a male-dominated industry. A collaborative project that creates empowerment and visibility in the community. Together, the women are ensuring a fairer and more balanced situation and have managed to start a process of awareness and transformation throughout the whole cooperative.

Nature

The region’s reliable dry and rainy seasons (it rains reliably from December to March) allow farmers to focus on process and quality without production being disrupted by unpredictable weather.

Thanks to its ideal geographic location, predominantly temperate climate and a coffee tradition dating back to the early 18th century, Brazil has become one of the world’s leading coffee producers. Around 30% of the global coffee harvest comes from the nutrient-rich, mineral-laden soils of South America’s largest country — nearly one in four coffee plants grows here.
Farms located within the coffee belt benefit from tropical to subtropical conditions, typically producing smooth, mild and delicately spiced coffees.

Minas Gerais first gained recognition for its rich mineral deposits, but today, it is one of the largest coffee-growing regions in the world.

The key to its coffee’s exceptional quality lies in the consistent ripening process of the cherries. Moderate temperatures, well-defined dry and rainy seasons and elevations between 900 and 1,250 meters provide optimal conditions for slow and even maturation. This extended development allows the cherries to absorb more nutrients from the plant, resulting in complex flavors, pronounced sweetness, balanced acidity and a velvety texture — a terroir that produces some of the most exquisite and flavorful coffees in the world.

Impact

"Women are an important part of the production, so they must also be part of the decision-making." says Vânia Lucia Pereira da Silva, Vice President of COOPFAM and member of MOBI - Mulheres Organizadas Buscando Independência (organized women in search of independence).

In rural Minas Gerais, it was (and still is) common that women help their husbands grow coffee on small family farms, but unfortunately they have little say in business or agricultural decisions. When a woman became a widow, she had to attend meetings of many men alone - so other women came along to support her. They quickly realized that it was worth attending the meetings and began to organize themselves. In 2006, the time had come and the internal initiative MOBI was founded. In addition, cooperation with the wives of the cooperative members was intensified in order to understand and improve their situations too. MOBI, the women's initiative, has led to a process of awareness and transformation throughout the whole cooperative.

"These are things I have always done but now I am getting credit for them", says Dayany de Assis dos Santos Ferreira, a member of MOBI.

Natural processed coffee is particularly resource-efficient, as the beans are sun-dried, requiring minimal water for processing — a sustainable method that significantly reduces its environmental footprint. This traditional approach also allows small-scale farms to produce high-quality coffee in an eco-friendly manner without the need for expensive infrastructure or large-scale water treatment facilities, supporting their economic independence while preserving the local environment.

Taste

The coffee combines the quality of southern Minas Gerais and the special care of the farmers.

The coffee cherries are processed using the natural drying process (the coffee is dried with the fruit still on the bean). This process is particularly low in water and emphasizes the sweet, fruity aromas in the coffee, as the beans are exposed to the natural sugar of the fruit for a longer period of time.

The classic nutty coffee flavour of hazelnut, the subtly more complex fruitiness of stone fruit and a slightly caramel-like sweetness of brown sugar create a really tasty coffee.

Fun Fact

Café Feminino, which is grown and distributed exclusively by MOBI, is 10% more expensive than the usual Fairtrade coffees from COOPFAM. These increased proceeds are regarded as a donation and are reinvested directly in the project. Café Feminino was officially served at both the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
