Quick info

This organic coffee comes from a committed cooperative of smallholder families in western Honduras. In the middle of the tropical rainforest, the coffee cherries ripen into a lovely, soft coffee. With notes of brown sugar, dulce de leche and toffee. Taste and community united: investments in infrastructure and education promote the common good and local independence.

Farmers

The small farmers' cooperative "Cooperativa Capucas Limitada" is located in the west of Honduras, nestled in the tropical rainforest. Several families from twelve communities grow coffee there according to Fairtrade standards. Many are continuing the work (and knowledge) of their families, with the aim of making cultivation ever more innovative and sustainable. Due to the small size of the different members, they often specialize in certain varieties, which makes them experts in their own plants. "Being small producers is our guarantee of good agricultural practices and the best quality for our customers," says Omar Rodríguez Romero, Managing Director of the cooperative.

Nature

The different farmers specialize in different varieties, and the variety is impressive: our coffee alone includes the Bourbon, Catuaí, Caturra, IHCAFE 90, Lempira and Pacas varieties. But not only coffee plants are grown locally, many farmers cultivate other tree species on their land: citrus fruits, peaches, mangoes, bananas, walnuts, avocados, cedar, mahogany,... this preservation of biodiversity is good for nature and therefore also for the coffee. Some farmers also work as beekeepers. The production of honey is promoted in accordance with the production standards of fair trade and organic certifications. They are very aware that bees are of central importance both for agriculture and for the preservation of biodiversity. Organic fertilizers are also developed and produced locally to meet the nutritional needs of our plants and soil. And here, too, the international organic certification regulations are consciously followed.

Impact

The diversification of agriculture is not only good for nature, but also offers the farmers additional opportunities for food supply and sources of income.
As part of its support for community development, Capucas is investing in a health center in the village, where the cooperative pays for a general practitioner who can be consulted by members free of charge from Monday to Friday.
In order to keep up with quality and efficiency on an international level, COCAFCAL provides members or anyone interested in training in barista and coffee cupping with a coffee academy. With a laboratory and highly qualified trainers, both certified by SCA.
In addition, the Fairtrade premium was used to finance a small awareness campaign on environmental protection and new ovens for the farmers and their trained installation. These are not only more effective and sustainable when it comes to nature, but also less harmful for the families.
Last but not least, a dedicated soccer school looks after members' children of all ages - providing exercise and a social space for future generations in the region.

Taste

Due to the specific selection of the different varieties, this coffee has a sweet and smooth taste. With notes of brown sugar, dulce de leche and toffee, it is rather sweet and therefore very accessible to many. Some of the varieties included were developed in Honduras, and almost all of them offer a balanced and clean flavor profile - a fine coffee that adds a gentle touch to any breakfast, any moment.
We recommend preparing this coffee as an espresso or filter.
