Quick-Info

In the ideal climate of the Indonesian island of Java, about 180 smallholders nestle next to the Ijen volcano complex. Here, the ground is loose and stores lots of water, a vertile volcanic loam. Full of minerals and trace elements — nutrients that develop a full flavor. Unique natural conditions and careful cultivation make Java coffees so particular. Unusual, BURNI GRADE 1 comes as a natural process coffee.
We roasted for you a fruity part of cantaloupe melon, in flavours of caramel and chocolate, with a finish of soft red wine.

• volcanic soil (valuable minerals and trace elements, nutrients for a full flavor)
• shade trees (sun protection and better soil for the coffee plants, further income for the farmers)
• small holder cooperative (each stronger together)
* Untypical for Java: This is a natural process coffee.

FARMERS – Few families with little land

This coffee comes from little family-owned small holder farms in the neighbouring villages of Curah Tatal and Kayumas on the island of Java – the average size is just 0.5-2 hectares each (!). This is so small, most of the harvesting is made by hand and the farmers do not own machines to process their harvest themselves. So they become a member of a cooperative that bundles the processing, and keeps an important part of the value creation at site. Furthermore these cooperatives support their members with technical support, seedlings, knowledge transfer, building of infrastructure and other benefits.

Climate change in the area has significantly affected the weather patterns, so a sustainable way of agriculture is in their own interest.
They keep a number of cattle, goats and poultry and use the manure this produces as organic fertilizer for the coffee farms.
Farmers often also grow other crops such as clove, jackfruit and avocado, which is good for the environment, the coffee plants and the soil, as it is not being exhausted by monocultures. This may lead to smaller amounts of coffee harvest per year, but overall more income for the farmers.

NATURE – Right next to volcanos

Curah Tatal and Kayumas are situated in the east of the Indonesian island of Java. They are nestled next to the Ijen volcano complex with Indonesias most active volcano Raung.
Java has a humid, tropical climate and is very much known for its fertile volcanic soil, which contains an abundance of valuable minerals and trace elements. These nutrients are needed to develop a full flavor. Furthermore, the volcanic soil is very loose and therefore able to store large quantities of water as a moisture depot, so to speak.

Shade trees
The use of shade trees on the plantation is a traditional method to protect the coffee plants and the coffee cherries from direct sunlight while maintaining soil moisture and biodiversity. This practice supports a healthy ecosystem in which the coffee plants thrive naturally. It furthermore generates income streams at other times of the year, as the farmers also plant other crops like clove, jackfruit and avocado.

FUN FACT: The pearly tree frog (Nyctixalus margaritifer) is a threatened species of frog that is endemic to Java, Indonesia. It occurs in undisturbed highland forests, but it is also known from coffee plantations with adequate forest canopy cover, which is the case with the farms of this coffee. The frogs and the coffee plants share the same ecosystem, therefore for the frogs it is very important that the coffee is grown organically, in harmony with the surrounding nature.

IMPACT – Helping each other

The small holders traditionally cultivate organic coffee in harmony with the environment. Together they form the cooperative Koperasi Surya Abada Kayumas, which supports each farmer technically, but also with knowledge on irrigation systems, landslide prevention, planting distances between trees, shade and fruit tree planting, hunting bans and biodiversity protection. Resources are pooled to the benefit of the group.
Foremost together the cooperative takes care of the collection and processing of the coffee. Therefore a big part of the value is created with the farmers involved.

In addition to that a cooperative is a bigger player and has more leverage talking to and trading with other bigger economy partners. One of them is Indokom (a private exporter) who, together with ICCRI (Indonesia Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute) has helped the cooperative with fairtrade and organic certification (which opens new and more profitable market sections). They also provide ongoing technical, agricultural and marketing assistance and pay for new seedlings.
Last but not least through funding community infrastructure is being build (roads, toilets, warehouses and waste tanks). This leads to more efficiency but also to a stronger community at site.

Of the 180 members around 60 are female farmers, whilst the head of the cooperative Mrs Siti, continues to grow the female membership. Trainings are provided for rebalancing gender inequalities whilst considering the cultural diversity too.

To be member of the cooperative means to earn more money but also to be a part of something bigger. This is encouraging more of the younger generations to stay in the villages, which is vital to the continuation of the community.

To choose this organic and fairtrade coffee, helps to shape the dynamic coffee economy and to protect the people and the environment in Indonesia, which have been brutally exploited by dutch colonizers in the past for so long.

TASTE – Java, but different

A unique interplay of all natural conditions and the careful cultivation make Java coffee so particular, and therefore this BURNI GRADE 1 too. Java coffee taste is rich, smooth, and complex. It offers a full-bodied experience with earthy undertones and a hint of spice.

Untypical for Java, as the climate in the mountains is often too humid, though, this is a natural process coffee (coffee cherries are dried with the fruit still on the bean) This processing creates a different flavor profile than the typical wet-hulled Mandheling.

We present to you unique coffee that got processed different than normally. We roasted for you a fruity part of cantaloupe melon, surrounded by the rather typical Java flavours of caramel and chocolate, but with a special finish of soft red wine.
