Quick info
Traditional cultivation under protective shade trees preserves the coffee plants and makes a sustainable contribution to maintaining soil moisture and biodiversity. Cultivation altitude, variety and processing also play an important role. In the end, it is the unique interplay of these parameters that leads to a rich and complex taste experience. A pleasure reminiscent of tropical fruit.
Farmers
Fifty years ago, farmers in the north of the Indonesian island of Sumatra learned not to grow coffee as a monoculture. They planted mixed crops and shade trees on the plots around their small houses. This laid the foundation for successful organic certification around 50 years ago - and also for a unique coffee region that is unparalleled in the world today.
Unfortunately, many coffee farmers in the region had to leave their farms for decades due to a civil war. On top of this, the country fell victim to the great tsunami in 2004, which caused terrible devastation. In 2005, a peace agreement was finally reached between the Indonesian government and the "Free Aceh" movement. This was a new start for the region and in 2006 the Permata Gayo Cooperative was founded by 50 founding members. Since then, coffee cultivation in the region has been growing and is increasingly gaining worldwide recognition. More than 2000 members are now involved in the cooperative, mostly small family farms that grow, nurture and care for coffee together with their neighbors.
The farmers are proud of their work and look forward to inspiring the coffee industry around the world with their product.
Nature
A unique interplay of natural conditions provides the ideal basis for coffee cultivation.
The Indonesian island of Sumatra has a humid, tropical climate and is known for its fertile volcanic soil, which contains an abundance of valuable minerals and trace elements. These nutrients are needed to develop a full flavor. Furthermore, the volcanic soil is very loose and therefore able to store large quantities of water as a moisture depot, so to speak.
At an altitude of 1000 to 1600 meters above sea level, the farms benefit from a cool, temperate climate with sufficient rainfall. The coffee plants thrive magnificently and the coffee cherries take longer to ripen, but therefore have more time to develop complex aromas.
The use of shade trees on the plantation is a traditional method to protect the coffee plants and the coffee cherries from direct sunlight while maintaining soil moisture and biodiversity. This practice supports a healthy ecosystem in which the coffee plants thrive naturally.
This ideal climate and natural conditions allow the coffee to develop its distinctive flavor profiles, making this region one of the best coffee growing regions in the world.
Impact
In addition to its taste, Gayo coffee is also valued worldwide for its environmental sustainability and the well-being of farmers. The coffee farmers practice traditional environmentally friendly cultivation methods or introduce new innovative techniques. These include the planting of mixed crops and shade trees, the careful selection of beans, environmentally friendly processing and drying with sunlight. The cooperative also provides tools to combat weeds, which can harbor and spread coffee diseases and pests. Thanks to the support, the coffee farms can keep their plants healthy almost without the use of chemicals and the use of chemical herbicides has been reduced by 95%. As a result, Gayo coffee is produced to high standards and has a low environmental footprint.
In addition to promoting coffee production, the cooperative also focuses on developing and strengthening the community by providing training and support to farmers and applying fair trade principles. For the months between harvests, the cooperative provides a feeding program to ensure the livelihood of its members.
Taste
Sumatra's volcanic soil is also represented in the taste profile. Every sip of this excellent coffee reflects the special climatic and geographical conditions of the region and impresses with an excellent taste experience. The coffee beans present themselves with a full body and a wealth of complex aromas that are second to none.
As the climate in the mountains of Sumatra is too humid for traditional drying, a processing method developed in Indonesia is particularly widespread here: Giling Basah. This means something like "wet grinding" or "wet hulling", probably more familiar to others as "wet-hulling" or "semi-washed". This gives the bean another chance to ferment during the preparation process, which also contributes to the characteristic aromas.
Ultimately, our roasting process produces tropical aromas reminiscent of fruits such as starfruit and kiwi. A mild sweetness rounds off the taste experience.
A truly unique coffee, the export quantities of which to Germany are not yet particularly high, but demand is steadily increasing.
We recommend preparing this coffee as an espresso or filter.
