Quick info
In the cloud forests of Villa Rica, high in the Peruvian Andes, women of the region’s first ecological women’s cooperative cultivate their coffee with loving dedication and sustainable methods. Hand-picked and naturally processed, the beans reveal notes of orange zest, macadamia nut, and mascabo sugar. Every cup blends exceptional flavor with social responsibility and a deep respect for nature and community.
Farmers
Welcome to Finca Santa Sofia, where coffee is grown with the same values it represents: sustainability, quality, biodiversity and fair conditions. The farm is part of the first and only ecological women’s cooperative in the region. Today, 28 women do every step by hand – from growing and nurturing the coffee trees to harvesting and drying the cherries.
Peru is a hotspot for organic coffee, farmers here rely on traditional, natural methods—using organic fertilizers, avoiding chemicals and pesticides and repurposing coffee pulp, mulch and other organic materials. Strict quality controls throughout the process ensure exceptional coffee with minimal damage to people and the environment on site.
The harvest takes place between April and October and is followed by natural processing, where the cherries dry slowly over weeks, turned multiple times daily for even drying. This method enhances the coffee’s fruity and sweet characteristics while reducing its environmental footprint — no fuel-powered machinery is required and water consumption is minimal also preventing harmful wastewater pollution.
Nature
Finca Santa Sofia is located in the Villa Rica district of Peru. In 2010, a new UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the Biosfera Oxapampa-Asháninka-Yánesha, was established here, in the misty cloud forests of the Andean foothills along the upper Amazon basin.
The region offers exceptional geographical conditions — ideal temperatures, balanced rainfall, humidity and natural shade. At 1,400 to 1,900 meters above sea level, a special microclimate creates coffee with a truly distinct flavor profile, which is unique in the world.
Environmental conservation is a priority at every stage of coffee production. Native trees are preserved, providing habitats for birds, butterflies and other insects. Water sources remain unpolluted, protecting the ecosystem of local fish, amphibians and reptiles.
By maintaining biodiversity and preventing deforestation and soil degradation, these efforts help protect both the natural ecosystem and the traditional livelihoods of the region’s communities.
Impact
Finca Santa Sofia is part of CEMCAVIR – Cooperativa Ecológica de Mujeres Cafetaleras Villa Rica, which translates to “Ecological Cooperative of Women Coffee Farmers in Villa Rica”. As the name already suggests, it is the first and only ecological women-led coffee cooperative in the region. The cooperative is deeply committed not only to strict quality control throughout all stages of cultivation and production but also to social and environmental responsibility.
The cooperative was founded with the goal of securing fair prices for female coffee farmers, enabling economic growth and improving the quality of life for their families. Members receive training in sustainable farming, leadership and farm management, empowering them to optimize costs and enhance their coffee businesses.
At its core, the cooperative is dedicated to producing high-quality coffee in harmony with nature. Natural habitats are preserved, and organic fertilization, pesticide-free farming and other sustainable agricultural methods are not obligations but fundamental principles.
The plantation also holds the “Seal Free of Child Labor” (SELTI) certification, ensuring that no child labor is used and that prevention and remediation measures exceed what is required by Peruvian law.
Coffee must be cultivated with passion and care — at Finca Santa Sofia, it is clear that coffee farming goes hand in hand with social and environmental responsibility.
