Quick info

The sweet aromas of raspberry jam and the juiciness of blood orange make this coffee really enjoyable. Dukunde Kawa means "love coffee" and reflects the dedication and quality standards of the coffee farmers. The cooperative also runs intensive environmental and social programs - 80% of its members are women. A coffee full of joy and responsibility in every cup.

Farmers

Most farmers in the Northern Province of Rwanda only have small plots of land - coffee trees are often grown with other food crops in the family gardens. To maximize the value of the coffee, the Dukunde Kawa Musasa Cooperative provides four washing stations. These give the smallholders the opportunity to pool their harvests and increase the price per kilogram through high-quality processing methods. The cooperative is an important employer and an integral part of the daily life of the communities. It also offers basket weaving projects, access to grain mills, loans for school fees or medical care, a milk pasteurization plant and agricultural training. This shows the essential role of the cooperative for the farmers.
Its actions and decisions are guided by a democratically elected president, a board of directors, a management team and a general assembly.
In Kinyarwanda, the local language, Dukunde Kawa means "love coffee". The cooperative now has more than 2000 members, 80% of whom are

Nature

Rwanda is also known as the "land of a thousand hills". With many high peaks and two annual rainfall periods, a unique humid and mild microclimate is created in the northern province of Rwanda. There is a wonderfully complex, distinctive terroir that offers ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. To avoid monocultures on the slopes, the farmers receive a young shade tree with every coffee plant they collect from the cooperative.

Impact

Rwanda is considered one of the most stable countries in the region. The economy has grown every year since 2003, with specialty coffee production playing an important role.
Organic, Fairtrade and rainforest certifications have helped to invest in modern production facilities in order to increase the quality and thus the value of the coffee.

The farmers who work with Dukunde Kawa are given access to agricultural training on a "model farm" and are supported in their work with discounted fertilizers and organic pesticides, among other things. All of this improves yield and quality. As a result, members have at least doubled their income.

Income is also diversified. Women produce local handicrafts after the harvest (May to September). And all farmers are given a cow for self-sufficiency or, thanks to the cooperative's milk pasteurization plant, a wide variety of dairy products can be produced for their own consumption or for sale.

In addition, Dukunde Kawa runs various social programs, provides access to a grain mill and gives out loans for school fees and medical care.

Taste

Our coffee is a carefully hand-picked selection of the cooperative's ripest and fruitiest beans.
The Red Bourbon variety stands out visually with its characteristic coffee cherries. In terms of taste, the coffee impresses with its exceptional sweetness and complex flavor nuances. The sweet aromas of raspberry jam and the juiciness of blood orange make this coffee really enjoyable. It leaves a pleasantly velvety mouthfeel that rounds off the enjoyment perfectly.
Thanks to its high quality and unique taste, Red Bourbon is a popular choice among coffee lovers looking for a special taste experience.
We recommend preparing this coffee as an espresso or filter.
